First, ensure the continuing success of the NCLEX exams and, second, develop the NGN to provide a valid and direct measurement of the clinical judgment needed by entry-level nurses for safe and effective care. This past year involved adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic. We know it impacted all of us, and it also impacted the testing, and operations, and modifications needed to be made. An important modification at the start of the pandemic was the reduction to a maximum of 130 score items, and we made this change permanent this past October.

Regarding the methodology, the study utilized a pre-post survey design. NCSBN partnered with the British Columbia College of Nursing professionals and the College of Nurses of Ontario to survey nursing leaders in both provinces between May and November of 2019. An initial 19-item confidential online survey was administered using Qualtrics. Questions were divided into three topic areas, demographic and professional information including sex, age, title, credentials, year and position, health facility information including size and location, and health facility practices with respect to adverse event tracking and reporting.

Nurses with less than two years experience used a questioning approach to collect patient data and nurses with 3-5 years experience used an “unquestioning” approach. That is, they collected patient information more or less through observations. Nurses who had not received professional training or reorientation in ten or more years tended to be patient-oriented and were able to observe more patient related cues.
