QQuueessttiioonnnnaaiirree DDeevveellooppmmeenntt A number of processes were used to create, evaluate and refine the survey instrument used for the 2002 RN Practice Analysis study. First, the activity items and knowledge cate- gories created by the panel of experts were reviewed and edited by the 2002 NCSBN Examination Com- mittee. The resulting 137 activity items and 18 knowledge categories were incorporated into a survey format. That preliminary survey was used in a pilot study to explore the clarity and efficacy of the survey questions and instructions. The pilot study, performed in May and June of 2002, revealed that the survey was too long and instructions for com- pleting the priority ratings needed improvement.

Her studies focus on the utilization of person-centered language, implementing stigma reduction and addiction curriculum-based interventions, expanding addiction workforce capacity, and conducting health services research aimed at informing nursing education and practice regulations. She is also a strong advocate for nursing practice, recognizing that nurses are in ideal positions to identify patients with at-risk substance use. Dr. Mahmoud is the recipient of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Ruth Perkins Kuehn Award for Doctoral Student, Rising Star of Research and Scholarship, as well as the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Abuse Marianne Marcus Award.

., 2003); consistency between the change sought and existing organizational policies (Eby, Adams, Russel, & Gaby, 2000); and staff sense (at all levels) of having participated in the process (Kash, Naufal, Cortes, & Johnson, 2010). Sustainability research demonstrates that sustaining any organizational change is an ongoing process and that ongoing efforts must be put in place (Buchanan et al., 2005). Barb Bowers discusses how to get from the ideal of culture change to reality. 92013 Long-term Care Monograph | While size alone has not been found to influence an organization’s capacity for change, research supports the negative influence of distant decision authority and policy development that can occur in multiple site organizations such as nursing home chains (Kruzich, 1995).

The first lesson lays the groundwork for the rest of the course by explaining that although mistakes and misjudgments can be part of a (painful) growth experience, everyone has the capacity to learn from this experience and to change. Using a visual model of a “staircase,” nurses are asked to begin to reflect on the professional ideal of reaching the top of the staircase; a more thorough reflection on a professional ideal is required later in the course. Various scenarios presenting common ethical dilemmas are used to assist nurses when answering questions in the interactive exercises.
