Pregnancy should not be a reason to avoid treating acute pain because of con- cern for opioid misuse or NAS. Obstetric care providers need to be knowledgeable about the medical, social, and legal consequences that can accompany opioid use by pregnant women. Pregnancy provides an important opportunity to identify and treat women with substance use disorders.
