The 2026 NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN test plans were approved at the NCSBN annual meeting in August of 2025. They will go into effect on April 1st of '26, and until then, the current test plans will remain in place. However, the test plan will be, the new test plan, excuse me, will be available on our website in December of 2025. As for changes, the overall structure and category weightings remain very stable.

Ernesto Hugwin [SP] is a dialysis nurse in El Paso, Texas. And he kept seeing patients who would come in to receive treatment and because of their diabetes, they were ending up with neuropathy in their feet, and those small nicks and wounds would be exacerbated and needing to get amputations. And he was like, "There has to be a tool that can help these patients check their feet, to share information with their provider.

Schowalter, MEd, RN, a founding “mother” of the organization and nursing regulatory pioneer who passed away on May, 26, 2025. Her contributions to regulation and public protection are profound. At a 1977 meeting of the American Nurses Association Council of State Boards of Nursing, Schowalter made the motion to form a task force to study the reorganization of the ANA Council of State Boards of Nursing, which led to the founding of NCSBN.
