EOs must navigate challenges related to interpreting scope of practice boundaries 69, addressing violations of professional boundaries between nurses and patients 2, balancing patient confidentiality with the duty to warn or protect the public 93, managing cases involving nurse impairment because of substance use or mental health issues 70, and ensuring fairness and consistency in disciplinary decision-making.26 Resolving these dilemmas requires sound ethical reasoning, consultation with legal counsel and the Board, and a steadfast commitment to the primary mission of public protection.29 Think of your Ethical Compass. In the often complex and sometimes ambiguous terrain of nursing regulation, your ethical principles serve as an indispensable compass.

We were focused on the second and third words, but now all of a sudden, we're really focused on this first word, all of a sudden. ©2023 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. All rights reserved. 5 Well, let's see what that does for us. Let's guess C. Well, now here we are. That's pretty good. And by the way, we have a feeling there's an E following the TH. It could be a Y, right, for the Shakespearean restaurants out there. But what else do we want to do here? At this point, we haven't been methodical yet, because there were 2.5 quintillion possibilities. But at this point, take a look. Again, focus on the first word.

But I'm just kidding. So I'm going to get an email now from the governor's office saying, "Stop ripping on North Dakota." But it could be statements, but it could also be commands. It could be like, you know, hey, I need a formula in Excel that does X, Y, and Z. So, you know, really be thinking about it's not just you can ask it questions too. Think of it like you're having coffee with a friend and you can converse with this too. It can actually give you ideas as well. But like I said earlier, the specificity of your prompting will determine the relevancy and accuracy of your AI's response.

The cognitive continuum theory serves to reconcile the opposing views that decision-making is purely analytical or purely intuitive (Hammond, 1981; Harbison, 2001). It assumes that decision-making strategies are located along a continuum that is determined by the task structure (Hamm, 1988; Thompson, 1999b). In other words, the situational context of a problem determines which strategy is the most ideal approach to decision-making. In nursing clinical decision-making research, evidence for this postulation comes from studies that show nurses varying decision strategies for different tasks and problems (Corcoran, 1986a, 1986b; Hicks et al., 2003; Lauri et al., 2001; Cader et al., 2005; Hughes & Young, 1990).
