I'm going to be presenting today on behalf of my colleagues on the results of a national survey that we conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, to really focus on identifying barriers that existed for APRN practice before the pandemic, and also the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on APRN practice. I'm Ruth Kleinpell and I'm currently at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and together with Mavis Schorn, who's at Vanderbilt, we collaborated with Carol Myers who's at the University of Tennessee College of Nursing, and Wendy Likes who's at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing.

And you'll see from this map in particular that the population distribution is spread heavily on our eastern seaboard with Victoria, New South Wales, and Southeast Queensland where the majority of the population lives. This is relevant for today's conversation obviously because those areas are where we've had the biggest and the greatest sort of spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and where there have been the most challenges sort of containing the spread. Just to move on then about how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Australia, this slide is an overview. It's dated late January this year, which gives you a sort of snapshot of the COVID status.

The findings provide accurate and reliable data on the demographic and practice charac- teristics of the nursing workforce and inform both state and federal policy to support sustainable nursing workforce planning. Amid the emergency phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the nursing workforce underwent a dramatic shift characterized by heightened workplace burnout, increased workloads, and the loss of hundreds of thousands of experienced RNs and LPNs/LVNs. In the ensuing two-year period, the workforce has exhibited greater stability than during the emergency phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, marked by a return to a more typical age distribution.
