However, there are a number of programs in Jamaica that produce practical nurses. The training and work of practical nurses, which are separate from enrolled assistant nurses, are not regulated by the Nursing Council of Jamaica5. A similar situation can also be found in Haiti. The Ministère de la Santé Publique et. de la Population (Ministry of Public Health and Population, MSPP) oversees the training and practice of nurses and assistant nurses, referred to infirmières and infirmières auxiliaires, respectively. However, there are also a variety of programs in Haiti that produce “registered nurses” and “practical nurses” that do not operate under the oversight of the MSPP.
