And the first rule of evidence that everybody needs to have, you know, a somewhat basic understanding of, is the hearsay rule. And that really is a very simple rule. A witness on the stand cannot say what another witness told that person unless that other witness is also going to be in court. That's it. Nurse A can't say, "Well, nurse Z told me X, Y, Z." Generally, that's not allowed. That's hearsay. There are a lot of exceptions to hearsay that may be applicable. And it's not just witness testimony that is subject to the hearsay rule, but it's also documents that are subject to the hearsay rule.

Additionally, researchers found a relationship between turnover and patient safety outcomes (Bae, Mark, & Fried, 2010; Duffield, Roche, O’Brien-Pallas, & Catling- Paull, 2009; Spector et al., 2015). Duffield and associates (2009) evaluated staff consistency across 40 nursing units and used the term churn to describe the con- stant movement of staff, thus cre- ating changes to skill mix and challenges in scheduling, per- formance management, and super- vision. They stressed the impact of continuity of care, highlighting a unit in their study with a high churn rate that had a higher rate of adverse patient safety outcomes than other units in the study.

The survey return due date was March 19, 2010. Phase two of the project will involve a randomized, con- trolled, multi-site, longitudinal study of three levels of simula- tion use in lieu of clinical hours. Students will be randomly assigned to a group where 25 percent of the time normally spent at clinical sites would be spent in simulation, a group where 50 percent of the time normally spent at clinical sites would be spent in simulation or a group where 100 percent of their time is spent at a clinical site.

But this is a trend. It's happening nationwide. There's no question about it that we're going to have to find a way to get nurse practitioners and PAs in situations where they can function in some of these rural communities. And I think one of the things that made the CoN process so effective, Chairman Watson, is that we went into it with the attitude of we're going to pass something and to me that really kind of set the bar. So we're going to pass something. I think that's fair enough. ©2022 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc.

Physicians are asking nurse practitioners to practice outside their lane. NPs are particularly vulnerable to this misalignment where they think that having skill sets that they develop on the job, "Oh, well, the supervising physician or the collaborating physician, or my colleague can teach me how to do X, Y, Z." ©2022 National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. All rights reserved. 3 It has to be part of that education and national certification. Procedural training by itself doesn't qualify competency. It creates misalignment when someone thinks that that's going to keep them in their role.

If you are looking for your first job, here are a few evidence-based tips as you interview and ask about their transition program: 1. The program needs to have full support of the organization. Talk to other new nurses in the setting to learn how effectively the program is being implemented. 2. A preceptor is key. In an ideal situation, you will have one preceptor, who has been trained on how to precept new graduates, and you will work together on the same shifts. The preceptor should have some release time so that you can share assignments, at least at the beginning.
