Marijuana smoke contains many of the same respira- tory disease-causing and carcinogenic toxins as tobacco smoke, often in concentrations several times greater than in tobacco smoke (11). Adverse socioeconomic conditions, such as poverty and malnutrition, may con- tribute to outcomes otherwise attributed to marijuana. For example, one population-based study reported that pregnant marijuana users were more often underweight and had lower levels of education, had a lower household income, and were less likely to use folic acid supple- mentation than nonusers (2).

Critical Thinking Developing the ability to think critically is essential to nurs- ing practice as it is with any profession where there is an obligation to be licensed to practice. The Delphi Research Project of 1990 describes the attributes of an ideal critical thinker, and authors (Facione, Facione & Sanchez, 1994) also contend these are the characteristics of a nurse with ideal clinical judgment using the core critical thinking cog- nitive skills of interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation and explanation as an interactive, reflective, reasoning process.

The SMEs provided positive ratings regarding the meeting and group process which helped to validate that job analysis processes were faithfully followed. Direct Observation The SME panels performed several tasks crucial to the success of the practice analysis study. Each panel member was asked to request that three of their colleagues com- plete a log of their daily activities. The daily logs were a proxy for the direct observation method of practice analyses. Since it would have been difficult and time-con- suming to conduct direct observations of RNs in a variety of work settings and specialty areas, asking the SMEs to provide daily logs seemed to be a reasonable proxy for the direct observation.
