You can consider the case study scenario as a capsule, and that the selection of the capsule is adaptive. Once you open a capsule, the six items are presented to you in a linear order. This is a graphical representation of the adaptive algorithms. The Y-axis is the scale used for both item difficulty and the candidate ability. On this scale, larger numbers indicate more difficult questions and a higher ability. Smaller numbers indicate easier questions and a lower ability. The X-axis tracks the number of operational items.

We will be on a listening tour beginning early next fiscal year, reaching out to you in a variety of ways to get information from you to help us look at what we need to do to engage members in a more meaningful way, and what changes do we feel and that you feel are necessary? Now, someone out there might be thinking, "Alicia, you know, I did recommend X, Y, and Z, a resource some years ago, and nothing ever happened." And I believe you. But again, this is a reset. Now, this does not mean that we are throwing out all programs and services that we currently offer, not at all. But we want to define potential enhancements, refine what we offer, and look at new offerings as well.

And according to the updated ability estimate, the computer finds you the matching item for you to answer. The more items you answer, the more the computer knows about your ability. Therefore, the computer is able to give you a more precise ability estimate. This is a graphical representation of the adaptive algorithms. The y-axis is the scale used for both item difficulty and the candidate ability. On this scale, a larger number always indicates a harder question and higher ability. A smaller number always indicates an easier question and a lower ability. The x-axis is simply a tracker of the number of operational questions.

In a position paper defining core faculty for the physical therapy discipline, Brueilly, Williamson and Morris (2007) refer to their faculty as taking a collaborative role. They also find it essential to integrate faculty from related fields or from the foundational sciences; they refer to this balance as the “ideal faculty team” (p.14). However, they also assert that these interdisciplinary faculty members should be “vigorously mentored” (p. 10) by the physical therapy faculty. www.ncsbn.org/National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. 7 Additionally, collaboration in clinical practice and across disciplines (Garman, Leach and Spector, 2006; Greiner and Knebel, 2003; McKay and Crippen, 2008) is essential in today’s health care environment.

There were weekly discussion posts focused and geared toward what a nursing education consultant needs to know for their role. We received a lot of feedback from faculty. We were also required to interact and respond to other students in the course, and a lot of these other students have leadership roles in regulatory agencies across the country. That was ideal, because we could easily bounce ideas off one another. I really appreciated the fact that it was open to regulators across the country. Because nursing practice and regulation across the country are so different, I think it’s important for us to not get stuck in our silos of how we do things in our individual jurisdiction or state.

Depending on the phrasing of the content in the item, an examinee may be required to discriminate between non-mutually exclusive actions that would impact the outcome of client care. According to Haladyna, multiple response items are simi- lar to the MCQs used on the NCLEX examinations. Haladyna (1984) has stated: Strictly speaking, this format is the con- ventional multiple-choice where more than one right answer exists. The under- lying rationale for this is that different lines of reasoning by test takers may logi- cally lead to the selection of other answers that are also correct. The only material difference [is that] test takers are informed that they may select more than one answer but if they choose incorrectly a penalty is assessed (p. 47).

The Council’s major current challenge is to complete a thorough review of the Nursing Act and identify areas which may require amendment to reflect newer trends and best practices in nursing education and practice. Horseshoe Bay, Southampton Parish, Bermuda Photo b y: iStock A national survey is underway to collect crucial information on the supply of registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs) in the U.S. Every two years, NCSBN partners with The National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers to conduct the only national-level survey specifically focused on the U.S. nursing workforce.
