All rights reserved. 3 other director or manager were the most common professional titles reported. Respondents were, on average, 50 years old and predominantly female. A master's degree was the most frequent level of nursing education reported and long-term care, hospital, and community represented the three most common facility types. Overall, 7 in 10 participants were from Ontario while over half of nursing leaders reported working in an urban healthcare facility. The median number of beds per facility was 140. Given the match pre-post design, the 121 individuals who responded to the post-survey largely mirrored the demographic and professional profile of the pre- survey sample.

Increased proportions of male and Hispanic/Latino nurses have introduced greater racial diversity in the nursing workforce. The nursing workforce is becoming increasingly more educated with more than 70% of RNs holding a baccalaureate degree or higher. More than one-quarter of all nurses report that they plan to leave nursing or retire over the next 5 years. Increased demand from the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation led nursing incomes to rise significantly across the country. Nurses were also specifically asked how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted them, and more than 60% of all nurses reported an increase in their workload because of the pandemic.

This nonprofit organiza- tion, made up of state commissions on uniform laws from each state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, was derived for the purpose of promoting “uniformity in state laws on all subjects where uniformity is deemed desirable and practicable.” The uniform regulations are developed by the organization and then handed over to the states with the hope that they will be adopted across all jurisdictions. The organization has drafted over 200 uniform laws since it was founded and continues today as an integral component of the U.S. legal system (’Lectric Law Library, n.d.).

Password dumpers, which are malicious programs that are placed on computers to harvest credentials, are now the number one variety of malware. The DBIR also categorizes the breaches according to type, such as exploiting vulnerabilities, or social engineering, and hacking. Over 80% of the breaches categorized as hacks involve lost or stolen credentials. Finally, the aim over 60% of phishing attempts is to acquire credentials, keeping in mind that phishing is the number one threat category. The bottom line, malicious actors want your credentials and will use them to breach your systems.

The new normal is not a defined phase, an event, or a mark in time. It is often a day-to-day adjustment to the elements disease, climate, the economy, legislation, and policy. Those influences do not recognize borders and nursing regulation challenges are shared by regulators all over the world. Global issues quickly become local issues, and if we harness our collective strengths, global solutions can inform local solutions and vice versa. The Board of Directors' charge, along with our CEO, is to ensure we are fit for the future.

We know that there are…if we deduplicate LPNs, and RNs, and APRNs, and just look at how many people there are, we know that we're just over about 5 million nurses in 1 of those 3 categories at the moment. But we also know from work that Kaitlynn Ward did in Washington, D.C., that there's about…there's over 4 million support workers, and they're called different things in different places, they have different scopes, etc, etc., but increasingly these are being used often with sometimes our most vulnerable in society.

And so one of the ways that we might think about increasing our APRN representation is by increasing the representation of diverse nurses working in the healthcare workforce. And so, again, as you can see, about 81% of RNs are white. And while the percentage of Hispanic and black RNs have increased over time, you can see that even between 2013 and 2020, the representation of black RNs increased from 6% to 6.7% in 7 years. And so, once again, these demographic shifts occur very slowly. And so if we expect to see real change over time, we have to get to work today.
